It is obviously true that the software stack that most of the world runs on is a towering mess of leaky abstractions, a sprawling mass of haphazardly-interconnected components that nobody could claim to fully understand. It's also often the case that documentation is wildly inadequate, and experiment can sometimes be the simplest route to clearer understanding.
